UCMT Announces the Creation of a Youth Task Force on Public Safety
In order to mentor a new generation of leaders, and to empower our youth today, The Youth Taskforce will develop a strategy to involve youth in the public policy discussion underway now about how public safety should look in the city of Minneapolis. UCMT will oversee the process and mentor their youth as they articulate their own vision based on what is working now and what new ways of keeping communities safe need support.
Since the death of Mr. George Floyd, youth have spoken out in their call for reform and transformation of public safety. Many youth leaders have demonstrated powerful insight and commitment to the difficult process of imagining and bringing into being a stronger community partnership with police, behavioral health, other first responders and community advocacy organizations.
The Youth Taskforce will put out a call for testimony from youth and will support youth’s perspective in discussions with the police department, the city council, the mayor and other policy makers.
